Backstory:
Having grown up in a bit of a family of somewhat-martial artists,, Kooga was taught, by her father, the "Koutsume Style". However, when he was 'replaced' by a Yoma, killing all seven of Kooga's older brothers as well as her mother, she took the liberty of defeating him with his own martial arts style.
She was then taken in by the Organisation and made into a warrior. Despite learning the classical Claymore-esque fighting style, she retained and continued to practise the "Koutsume Style" in honour of her family's memory, which made her famous (for all of the wrong reasons) among the young recruits, who nicknamed her the "Kitten" (koneko-chan).
After rising up the ranks rapidly to #17, many Claymores became somewhat intimidated by her fighting style and her nickname changed to "Mountain Lion Kooga". She is well on her way to a single-digit status.
Near-awakening:
On an Awakened hunt, her team (her, #9, #11 & #23 respectively) found themselves severely underpowered as their opponent was (unexpectedly) a former #2. Naturally, it was one-sidedly slaughtered until Kooga awakened, overwhelming and destroying most of the former-#2's body before another team arrived to finish the Awakened one off. Kooga managed to pull herself back to sanity with the help of a Claymore specialised in synchronising with others' youkis.

She has a tendency to use her Claymore poorly, such as throwing it and totally missing her target, resulting in landslides and so on so forth. She sometimes even throws her sword away because it gets in the way of her fighting.
On the other hand, she's very skilled with the custom-made 'claws' she demanded from the Organisation. Normally concealed in her armguards, with a subtle push she can extend her 'claws', and hence her nickname.
PS: Yes lol XD Kooga sounds a lot like "cougar". And it's meant to. Since cougars can also be called pumas, mountain lions, mountain cats, catamounts or panthers depending on the region, her nickname and her name are essentially the same thing lol (but since "cougar" has many unwanted connotations, "mountain lion" got picked as an alternative for the sense of grandeur it possesses).
